SUBJECTS related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are often said to strike fear in the hearts of many students.
For Gan Kien Sheng, however, STEM has been a source of fascination.
“I’ve always been interested in science, especially how the human body works and how medicine can help improve people’s lives.
“Seeing how healthcare professionals are able to make a real difference in patients’ well-being really inspires me.
“I would like to keep learning and growing in the field so that I can serve the community better and possibly contribute to advancements in healthcare,” said the 18-year-old, who aspires to pursue medicine or pharmaceutical science.
Gan’s passion for STEM recently saw him and his teammates, Renae Lee Szi Rui and Lim Zhen Xin, emerge as winners of UCSI University’s 12th National Science and Maths Quiz 2026.
The Chung Hua High School Seremban students edged out 37 teams to win full scholarships from UCSI to enrol in programmes of their choice, as well as an RM1,000 cash prize.
Reflecting on their journey, Gan encouraged students not to be intimidated by STEM-related subjects.
“STEM is not only for smart people; it’s for anyone who is willing to put in the effort and keep learning,” he said in a press release.
Lee, who scored straight As in 10 SPM subjects, said the win has been a massive boost to her confidence.
“I will continue this momentum into my future studies,” she said.
Themed “STEM for Future Adventures: Empower, Innovate, Sustain!”, the competition attracted 1,947 students nationwide for the Zone Level Challenge, with 114 students from 25 schools advancing to the grand finale on July 11.
The team from Tsun Jin High School finished second, receiving RM45,000 in scholarships and RM500 in cash, while the third-placed team from Kuen Cheng High School was awarded RM30,000 in scholarships and RM300 in cash.
UCSI University student affairs and alumni deputy vice-chancellor Assoc Prof Dr Mabel Tan Hwee Joo said developing STEM talent is crucial to Malaysia’s future.
“STEM education in the country is especially important today, now that our government is transitioning from a technology consumer to an artificial intelligence and digital innovation producer.
“Hosting this competition is a priority for us,” she said.
The National Science and Maths Quiz 2026 was jointly organised by UCSI University Kuala Lumpur Campus, UCSI University Springhill Campus and UCSI College.
Held annually since 2013, the national-level competition provides a platform to inspire young Malaysians to pursue STEM-related studies and careers.
