No censorship in proposed Finas amendments, assures Communications Minister

PUTRAJAYA: The proposed amendments to the highly-anticipated National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) Act will not involve censorship of streaming media, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister assured that the proposed amendments were centred on movie production and the welfare of those in the Industry.

"No. The amendments are more on the film production process," the Communications Minister said during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing here on Wednesday (March 19).

He said this included how films are viewed by the general public, who are no longer confined to theatres but can now view them through devices.

He also said the amendments would consider providing better welfare for the cast and crew members involved in the film production industry.

When asked if the proposed amendments would include provisions for censorship of streaming media, Fahmi said that censorship comes under the purview of the censorship board and not under Finas.

He said the proposed amendments would be tabled in Parliament this coming June at the earliest or during the end of the year.
