CONSTRUCTION of an RM18mil cross-drainage culvert beneath the KTM railway line between Taman Melawis and Lorong Sembilang 8E in Klang is scheduled for completion by late November to address recurring floods in the area.

Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the project was designed to manage surface run-off during heavy rainfall.

“Surface run-off will be channelled from Taman Melawis across to Pump House 38, located off Jalan Tepi Sungai.

“It will be stored in a 1,000cu metre concrete tank before being released,” he said at a press conference following an inspection of several flood mitigation projects in Klang.

He highlighted that the retention tank’s capacity was built specifically to accommodate heavy rainfall.

During his visit to Taman Seri Kerayong in Kapar, Izham instructed the developer’s site manager to ensure the concrete drain along Jalan Seri Kerayong 6, which is adjacent to residential properties, was properly maintained to prevent overflow.

“The development at Taman Seri Kerayong has an on-site detention (OSD) pond to manage surface run-off,” he said.

Izham also reported that 70% of the 255 short-term flood mitigation projects across Selangor, including localities in Klang and Ampang Jaya, have been completed.

These immediate measures, which include OSD ponds, flap gates and drainage upgrades, involve an allocation of nearly RM70mil targeting flash flood hotspots.

“Implementation of these ‘quick-win’ projects is being carried out by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), local authorities, Public Works Department (JKR) and other relevant agencies,” he said.

“Only 30% remain under construction and we are confident they will be completed by the end of this year.”

Izham said medium- and long-term works were also progressing, with combined state and federal funding.

“Medium-term projects taking over six months are ongoing, alongside more than 100 long-term projects with the Federal Government.

“An allocation of RM4bil has been provided by the Federal Government, while up to RM600mil has been allocated by the state government,” he said, noting that flood management measures require substantial costs.
