THE rousing sounds of dhol drums and the illumination of a vibrant kolam piece at the grand foyer marked the start of Sunway Pyramid’s month-long Deepavali campaign.

The shopping centre is celebrating the Festival of Lights with “Colours of Light”, inviting visitors to go beyond admiring festive decor and experience the culture behind it.

The grand foyer of the mall in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, has been turned into a spectacle of vibrant colours, lights and cultural experiences.

At the heart of the celebration is a two-tiered kolam, created live over six hours by artist K Kobi Kanasan.

The live showcase offered a peek into the precision and artistry behind this traditional decorative art form.

Sunway Malls Selangor marketing senior manager Jessica Teng added the final touches to the kolam, before the entire piece was illuminated to mark Sunway Pyramid’s Deepavali campaign launch the following day.

“There are three major elements to our Deepavali decor this year to complement the kolam – the colourful flowers, peacock and giant lotus.

“The vibrant colours and lights are also reflective of the spirit of the season – the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil,” said Teng, adding that the mall had been featuring Deepavali decorations yearly since it opened in 1997.

The illuminated kolam will remain as the campaign’s festive centrepiece throughout the season.

“Deepavali is a meaningful celebration of light which often represents hope and togetherness.

“We hope our centrepiece kolam and the activities we curate will create a deeper appreciation of traditional art and a genuine experience of warmth through community,” Sunway Malls Selangor chief executive officer Jason Chin said in a media statement.

Sunway Pyramid’s Deepavali campaign will feature cultural performances that add a musical dimension to “Colours of Light”, and bath bomb-making workshops by Lush to be held on selected weekends.

Shoppers can also try on traditional Indian attire and accessories and take photos at one of the booths in the grand foyer.

In addition, Sunway Lagoon Mart’s booth offers a selection of snacks such as murukku and kacang putih for sale.

Those who spend a minimum of RM350 in two same-day receipts can redeem a Godiva chocolate gift box and Jasmine basmati rice pack.

Sunway Pyramid’s Deepavali campaign is ongoing until Nov 15.
