Selangor will continue to focus on building public housing or affordable homes in the state, in line with the recently tabled Budget 2027.
State housing and culture committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said cooperation between the Selangor and Federal governments was essential to ensure the objective could be realised.
“Selangor has relatively high demand and substantial need for housing, with its population reaching eight million.
“The state government wants to ensure that the affordable housing issue is addressed, including targeting the construction of 200,000 housing units by 2028,” he said at the “Madani Kita” programme at Dataran Pantai Batu Laut in Tanjong Sepat, as reported by Bernama.
When tabling Budget 2027, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced measures to strengthen housing development and upgrade public infrastructure.
Housing and Local Government Ministry received an allocation of RM6.355bil, an increase of 4.38% from the previous year, to continue implementing housing initiatives improvements to public facilities around the country.
Key allocations include RM1bil for the implementation of Rumah Mesra Rakyat and Residensi Rakyat initiatives, RM700mil to upgrade public facilities in local authority areas and RM320mil for slope repairs and drainage systems.
Borhan said the state government, in collaboration with Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia, would be monitoring housing projects to ensure their smooth implementation.
Asked whether Selangor had plans to introduce a student housing project, he said the state had such a plan, taking into account the needs of its numerous universities and large student population.
“In addition, we may revive the rent-to-own scheme; we recently took over 3,004 units at Lembah Subang People’s Housing Project.
“These are among our priorities to ensure people in Selangor can afford to own their homes,” he added.
