RM16.3mil facility in Jalan SK10/3 can accommodate 230 traders
A TOTAL of RM16.29mil has been allocated to develop Pasar Awam SK10 in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, which will have lifts and escalators.
Subang Jaya mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said RM12mil of this sum was provided by the Federal Government, while the remaining funds would be allocated by Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).
“The market is expected to be completed by Aug 28, 2028.
“This is the first market in Selangor in which the design originated from a competition,” Rumaizi said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
MBSJ and the Malaysian Institute of Architects jointly organised the competition in 2024, seeking innovative concepts for the market located on Jalan SK10/3 in Seri Kembangan.
MBSJ Engineering Department director Dr Mohd Ariffuddin Kamari said the two-storey market would be able to accommodate 230 traders.
“A total of 172 lots will be built on the ground floor for vegetable, chicken, beef, non-halal products and food sellers.
“The remaining 58 lots on the upper floor will be for dry goods sellers and other small businesses,” he said.
For better accessibility, Mohd Ariffuddin said the 0.28ha market would have escalators and lifts too.
“Some other features include a community space on the second floor, lockable trading lots, management office and cold room,” he added.
Also present were Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin, Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali and MBSJ councillors Tey Boon Kiat, Lee Jen Uyin, Suzanah Hanim Wong and Chong Hoon Ming.
Siew Ki said the new market would incorporate green energy elements such as solar panels.
She also urged MBSJ to consider rebuilding the Seri Kembangan multipurpose hall on Jalan Besar, about 230m from the market’s site, into a multipurpose building with at least 600 parking bays.
Yeo urged the contractor to complete the construction on time.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Rumaizi and Siew Ki also symbolically demolished part of the market’s existing structure using an excavator.
The market’s redevelopment faced significant hurdles because the design brief for the new market did not mention parking facilities, as reported in StarMetro’s article “Work on Seri Kembangan market to start next year” published on Aug 25 last year.
Traders had been operating from a temporary site on Jalan SK6/1, about 1.5km from the market’s site, since April 2023.
They had reportedly struggled to make ends meet since moving to the temporary site.
