Mayor says 40 intersections with traffic lights will be covered at cost of RM1.2mil
TRAFFIC intersections in Skudai and Medini, in Johor, will have dedicated motorcycle zones under a project undertaken by Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP).
Iskandar Puteri mayor Datuk Hasrin Kamal Hashim said a contractor has been appointed to undertake the project with a contract value of RM1.2mil under its Phase 2.
“We are targeting 40 traffic light intersections at the Skudai and Medini areas and work will be carried out in stages,” he told StarMetro.
The motorcycle zone is a painted rectangular area at the front of a traffic lane that lets riders stop safely ahead of cars when the traffic light is red.
Cars and larger vehicles must stop behind the painted area and leave the box clear for two-wheeled riders.
Hasrin Kamal said the project roll out would be done according to the contractor’s work schedule, weather conditions, and traffic coordination at the involved locations.

He said Skudai and Medini were chosen for the project’s Phase 2 as both locations were identified as high-need areas based on traffic volume, motorcycle flow and vehicle movement conflicts.
“We now have 146 intersections with traffic lights under our supervision,’’ said Hasrin Kamal.
He said Phase 1 of the project, costing RM900,000, was completed in 2025, covering areas in Taman Bukit Indah, Taman Perling, Taman Nusa Idaman and Taman Nusa Bestari.
Hasrin Kamal said motorcycle zones at intersections were being added gradually based on space, traffic flow and safety needs, adding that MBIP was among the earliest local authorities in Johor to introduce the motorcycle zones.
He said separating motorcycles at a stoplight prevented collisions, increased rider visibility and allowed them to clear the intersection smoothly when the light turns green.
“Motorcycle zones are also not necessarily suitable for implementation at all traffic light intersections, whether at a T-junction or a four-way intersection.”
Hasrin Kamal said the implementation depended on the technical assessment of each location’s road width, lane count, traffic volume, vehicle mix, movement patterns and safety.
