A HOUSEWIFE has taken the initiative to decorate the compound of her home with the Jalur Gemilang, in conjunction with National Day, as a symbol of her love for the country.
Kitam Mat Deris, from Taman Madani in Dungun, Terengganu, said she began putting up the Jalur Gemilang and decorating the front compound of her home with various sizes of the flag early this month.
The effort was aimed at creating a festive National Day atmosphere while also instilling patriotic spirit among residents, particularly the young generation.
“Although I am already 55, I still want to do something to show my love for the country.
“The Jalur Gemilang decorations may seem simple, but I hope they can help foster national spirit,” she told Bernama when met at her home.
Kitam said her husband, Che Musa Ismail, 74, and their daughter, Murni Safiqah Che Musa, 32, also helped and contributed ideas in decorating their home.
She said most of the Jalur Gemilang flags and decorative items used to brighten up her home, were bought online to save time.
“So far, I have spent more than RM500 on Jalur Gemilang flags and various decorative items.
“For me, it is not about the amount of money spent, but rather the patriotic spirit and love for our country that matter most,” she said.
Kitam said her home was also selected to represent her residential block in a beautification competition organised by the Central Terengganu Development Authority in conjunction with the 2026 National Day celebration.
“This selection has further motivated me to ensure that my home looks cheerful and reflects the festive atmosphere of National Day,” she added.
Apart from decorating her home with the Jalur Gemilang, Kitam also spends her free time growing various ornamental plants and herbs in the garden.
