LRT Shah Alam Line owner and surrounding property developers have been directed to finish over three kilometres of pedestrian walkways across four main LRT hubs by end of December.
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has approved the network of covered and uncovered walkways to link the Stadium Shah Alam, Dato Menteri, UiTM Shah Alam, and Section 7 Shah Alam stations to surrounding areas.
The move follows public concerns on social media over poor connectivity and unmaintained paths around the newly opened rail network, owned by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.
The 37.8km line opened on June 29, with daily ridership projected to reach 67,260 this year, growing to 324,000 by 2050.
Speaking at MBSA’s full board meeting at Wisma MBSA, Shah Alam mayor Datuk Zabidah Safar said the walkways were essential for a seamless first- and last-mile transport network.
“Construction of the proposed pedestrian walkways for LRT users in Section 7 Shah Alam will cover an estimated 725m at Jalan Plumbum,” she said.
The UiTM Shah Alam route would cover 980m from Persiaran Selangor, extending from PKNS Block 3 and BHP petrol station to Raja Tun Uda Jamek Mosque pedestrian bridge and SK Section 16, she added.
For Stadium Shah Alam, the 583m walkway stretches from Persiaran Sukan − starting at the LRT station traffic lights − to TTDI Sentralis, as well as from Brunsfield to Management and Science University (MSU).
Work at the Dato Menteri station will be jointly undertaken by MBSA, Prasarana and private developers, alongside contributions from the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) and MSU across other sections.
On enforcement matters, Zabidah said MBSA’s Licensing Department, supported by its Sungai Buloh branch and Zone 18 Residents Representative Council, inspected a temporary hawker site and car boot sale on Jalan Nova, Section U5, on July 17.
“The operation was aimed at weeding out unlicensed traders, ensuring that food and beverage traders had valid typhoid vaccination certificates, and monitoring compliance with MBSA’s licensing requirements and regulations.
“Nine traders were penalised for operating without valid licences and for hiring foreign assistants, while the car boot sale organiser was warned to ensure vendor compliance,” she said.
Separately, the city council’s Building Department demolished illegal structures built on government land, including a car shade, at Jalan Asteroid U5/30B in Section U5 on July 1.
The operation was carried out alongside internal MBSA departments, Sungai Buloh police and the Petaling District and Land Office.
