SOME 200 underutilised bus stops in Shah Alam are to be repurposed into small-scale social and commercial spaces.
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Urban Transportation department deputy director Azizah Wakijan said experts have been engaged to identify suitable amenities to be built at these locations.
“There are currently 900 bus stops – some are maintained by MBSA, others by Public Works Department (JKR).
“We are looking at converting some of these bus stops into kiosks or rest areas for e-hailing riders,” Azizah said after the city council’s full board meeting at Wisma MBSA in Shah Alam, Selangor.
Azizah said some bus stops were built by property developers as part of conditions for obtaining planning approval for projects.
“However, some of these areas have low ridership, resulting in bus operators to cease services.”
Another related initiative was aimed at streamlining names and codes of bus stops, she said.
“Currently, Shah Alam is serviced by two bus operators – RapidKL and Smart Selangor.
“We want to streamline the names of stops and routes to help commuters.”
In a separate development, MBSA Engineering Department director Hanif Basree Abd Rahman said pedestrian walkways were being built at several LRT stations in Shah Alam.
Among stations involved were Stadium Shah Alam, UiTM Shah Alam, Seksyen 7 Shah Alam and Kerjaya.
“Work have commenced at the Stadium Shah Alam LRT.
“We aim to get the projects completed at all the stations this year,” he said.
