MORE than 1,000 cadets, their parents, teacher advisers and officers gathered for Penang State Cadet Day 2026 recognising youth achievement in volunteer service, leadership and academic excellence.
The event, organised by St John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM) North East Area at SMJK Chung Ling, was attended by cadets from 13 school divisions statewide.
North East Area commander Gregory Koay Feng Ling in his address said SJAM aimed to develop well-rounded youth.
“We hope to nurture not only high-achieving students, but also future leaders who embody compassion, a spirit of service and strong character,” he said.
Area deputy president Joseph Ng Soon Siang said academic success and community service should go hand in hand.
“Academic excellence and service to the community are not competing priorities; the best young leaders strive to achieve both,” said Ng.
Penang SJAM state commander Datuk Seri Dr Yee Thiam Sun, who opened the event, urged cadets to maximise opportunities within the movement.
“Treasure the opportunities given to you, strive for excellence and make a positive contribution to your family, society and nation,” he said.
A total of 246 new cadets were enrolled during the ceremony, with 17 being recognised for their outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results.
Among appointments announced for non-commissioned officer ranks were 35 cadet leaders, 42 cadet sergeants, 61 cadet corporals and 115 cadet lance corporals.
Awards presented included Special Service Shields for volunteer hours, and service awards recognising recipients across six years of cadet involvement.
The Grand Prior’s Award − the highest honour in the SJAM Cadet Programme −was presented to 15 recipients, with 10 receiving the award in person.
