THE Tuanku Canselor Hall at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak, lit up with cultural pride as the Lentera Batik 2026 showcase took centre stage.

Royal guest of honour Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim graced the event themed “Menyinari Seni Adibusana Warisan Perak” (Illuminating the Art of Perak’s Heritage Haute Couture).

Traditional baju kurung designed by Bachelor of Home Economics Education student from UPSI, Ainul Madihah Mohd Azhar, was displayed at the event.

Far from just a fashion show, the event marked a major milestone in establishing Perak batik as a premier, deeply rooted state identity that seamlessly evolves with contemporary style.

The runway came alive with a global twist.

A collection of 30 designs ranging from sharp men’s shirts to elegant baju kurung, kebaya and modern skirts was modelled not just by local students, but by international students from Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Austria, Kazakhstan, Germany, Pakistan and China.

UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the event served as a platform that united tradition and innovation, combining heritage with creativity and connecting the past with the future.

Md Amin emphasised that the university acted as a vital bridge connecting rich heritage with the digital generation.

“Through the traditional attire presented, we have the opportunity to witness how fabric and patterns can speak about the history, identity and character of a nation,” he said, reported Bernama.

“Through the active involvement of students, UPSI not only produces highly skilled graduates but also a generation of cultural heirs who understand the values of history, art and national identity.”

The event also showcased the results of a strategic collaboration between Perak Menteri Besar Incorporated, Kraftangan Malaysia and UPSI in the development and production of the “Batik Cura Perak” collection.

The entire process of producing the collection was driven by UPSI students from the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education, covering idea and concept development, fashion design, fabric selection, sewing processes and stage performance management.
