EFFECTIVE June 1, senior citizens aged 60 and above will enjoy discounts of between 10% and 15% when buying from traders at food courts, public markets and kiosks under Putrajaya Corporation (PPj).
The initiative, which would run for 12 months, would be introduced alongside a 30% rental discount for traders at these premises in Putrajaya over the same period.
To qualify for the discount, traders must settle all outstanding rental arrears up to May this year.
Announcing this yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the measures were expected to benefit about 240 traders.
The discounts were aimed at easing the financial burden faced by traders and senior citizens, many of whom had limited sources of income, she added.
“I understand that many small traders are facing challenges and targeted assistance is important to help them survive.
“The rental discount is also expected to create a positive spillover effect for senior citizens,” she said.
Yeoh spoke to the media after visiting the Precinct 9 food court in Jalan P9, Putrajaya with Federal Territories Department director-general Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain and PPj president Datuk Mohd Sakeri Abdul Kadir.
The initiative followed a similar move by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in April.
Under the earlier announcement, some 10,000 small traders in the capital were set to receive a 50% rental discount until 2027.
Beginning July 1, Kuala Lumpur traders who apply to renew their licences for more than two years would also enjoy reductions in renewal fees.
