Funds earned will be credited into ratepayers’ accounts under MPAJ’s initiative
AMPANG Jaya ratepayers will soon be able to turn recyclable waste into assessment tax payment under a new initiative.
From June 1 to Dec 31, registered assessment taxpayers can exchange recyclable materials and the amount received will be credited into their assessment tax accounts.
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) said the programme was aimed at encouraging recycling while helping residents meet their tax obligations.
“Under this initiative, residents can bring recyclable items to designated collection points through the ‘Trash-to-Cash’ programme.
“This effort promotes sustainable waste management practices while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills,” MPAJ said in a statement to StarMetro.
The council added that residents with outstanding assessment tax arrears could also offset overdue payments in this way.
MPAJ said the recyclable materials would be weighed and assessed according to market rates, with the value credited directly into the participant’s assessment tax account.
To participate, residents must be registered assessment taxpayers under MPAJ and provide their account numbers to facilitate the crediting process.
A variety of items, including paper, plastics, electronic waste and used cooking oil can be exchanged for credit.
The rates are set at 20sen per kg for plastic, paper and electronic waste, while metal is priced at 40sen per kg, aluminium at RM1 per kg and used cooking oil at RM3 per kg.
“There is no minimum or maximum value that can be credited to an assessment tax account through the programme.
“So far, 11 Trash-to-Cash collection events have been scheduled between June and early July.
“Additional programmes will be organised until December, including those conducted at the request of councillors and local communities,” it stated.
MPAJ hoped the initiative would encourage greater public participation in waste segregation and recycling by offering a practical incentive for environmentally responsible behaviour.
The local council described the programme as part of its efforts to create a cleaner community and foster a more sustainable ecosystem in line with Selangor’s First Plan (RS-1), which emphasises environmental sustainability and efficient resource management.
MPAJ said details of collection locations and programme schedules would be announced periodically through its official social media channels.
