Thousands of visitors from all walks of life made their way to the outdoor compound of Angsana Mall in Johor Baru for a two-day International Firefighters Day event.

Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said the carnival offered a wide array of activities for the public, including special safety demonstrations and exhibitions featuring the department’s history.

“It serves as a platform for us to appreciate the sacrifices and contributions of firefighters while strengthening ties between the department and the community.

“At the same time, we also hope to raise public awareness of fire safety and emergency preparedness, through a more interactive and educational approach,” she told StarMetro.

The national-level celebration was launched by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

Also present was Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad.

Siti Rohani said activities during the carnival included exhibitions of the department’s assets and equipment, rescue and firefighting demonstrations, performances, swimming lessons, virtual reality (VR) fire simulation, safety agency booths and stalls by local entrepreneurs.

“Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in activities with firefighters, including fitness challenges, fun run, children’s competitions and photography sessions with emergency vehicles and mascots.

“It was a good opportunity for the public to talk to firefighters directly to learn about the department and get advice about safety.”

She said the event received encouraging response, with 12,399 registered visitors.

“However, we believe the actual number of visitors was much higher as many did not register when entering the carnival grounds,” she added.

According to Siti Rohani, about 1,500 Fire and Rescue Department officers and firefighters from various divisions and units nationwide were involved in the event.

She said the celebration also saw the attendance of representatives and delegates from several countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and China, as a symbol of regional cooperation in firefighting, safety and disaster management. — By VENESA DEVI and UMESH RAVIKUMAR
