Utility mapping on Jalan Masjid India 90% done, settlement markers to be installed

UTILITY mapping for a 32km stretch of Jalan Masjid India is now 90% complete.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud said the upgrades for the pedestrian walkway is expected to start in October.

“We are also going to install settlement markers in the area to monitor soil movement.

"These markers will provide us with real-time readings.

"Should any soil movement or settlement occur, the data will be transmitted instantly, allowing us to take immediate pre-emptive action,” he said during a press conference held at DBKL headquarters.

Fadlun added that the city was currently awaiting a formal report from Malaysian Institute of Public Works (Ikram) to determine the number of monitoring devices required and their optimal placement.

On Aug 23, 2024, a tourist from India fell into an 8m-deep sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India.

Search and rescue operations were conducted for nine days before being called off due to safety concerns for the rescue team.

Fadlun also said that similar monitoring devices would be installed at 1,120 slope areas across Kuala Lumpur.

“The devices will be linked to DBKL command centre for soil movement monitoring,” he said.

Meanwhile, DBKL would cordon off the sinkhole on Jalan Wangsa Delima 4 in Wangsa Maju for two weeks.

“We discovered that the wall of the underground sump had collapsed, and we have yet to locate the debris from that fallen wall," said Fadlun.

“Our team is still investigating to determine the actual cause of the sinkhole that is 4m wide and 4m deep,” he said.

He added that repair work would commence once investigation was complete.
