Penang project a movement promoting confidence, active ageing

WHAT began as a reaction to seniors being mocked online has grown into a movement helping women aged 60 to 80 rediscover confidence and purpose.

The Glammas Project, founded by Goh Lay Dee, 72, and Engel Cheoh, 42, in 2024, brings together “glamorous grandmas” who take part in fashion showcases, wellness activities and community programmes promoting active ageing.

Cheoh told StarMetro the idea took shape after seeing young makeup artists and models mocking older women on social media.

“They were laughing at seniors, saying ‘old and ugly, still want to teach outdated makeup’,” she said.

“I felt very strongly about it. Everyone, regardless of age, has their own beauty and experience. Why laugh at others?

“Everyone grows old. Wrinkles and weight gain are part of life,” she said.

Determined to challenge those views, Cheoh and Goh organised the Amazing Amahs Fashion Show in 2022, a one-off fundraiser benefitting Orang Asli communities, that turned ordinary grandmothers into confident stage performers.

The response led to the formation of the Glammas Project which was aimed at helping seniors stay active and socially engaged.

Today, about 15 to 20 members, mostly aged 60 to 80, take part in training, workshops and community activities.

Cheoh said the project was guided by four pillars: empowerment through expression, holistic wellness, community and connection as well as advocacy and awareness.

Participants explore activities ranging from fashion and cultural showcases to fitness programmes, cooking workshops and social gatherings.

“Through fashion, arts, music, dance and lifestyle activities, participants rediscover confidence and are able to express themselves,” said Cheoh.

Wellness initiatives focus on the body and mind, with activities such as fitness sessions, healthy cooking and traditional Peranakan massage.

Cheoh said travel programmes, cultural workshops and home gardening sessions helped members form friendships and stay connected.

Advocacy is another key focus, with members supporting charitable causes and community initiatives.

“In Glammas, we promote active ageing and meaningful living.

“They have a circle of support, even if their children are overseas,” she said.

Cheoh said seniors should not be sidelined after retirement, as many remained active and were capable.

“You will be surprised, baby boomers are very hardworking,” she said.

She cited an upcoming Glammas charity event, where all 50 tables were sold out in two weeks, a sign of strong support.

Members are involved in organising events, with Cheoh mentoring them through planning and execution.

“I guide them in their roles. Many senior groups focus on ‘jalan-jalan’ and ‘makan-makan’ (walks and food hunt).’

“We focus on building a society where seniors can still contribute in meaningful ways,” she said.

Cheoh is hoping to co-create a fashion brand for seniors with local and international designers, with proceeds supporting charitable and community work.

“True glamour is not defined by age. It is about presence, confidence and self-worth,” she said.
