DBKL taking photo touts to court for flouting licensing regulations

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is taking two photographers to court for operating illegally near the Petronas Twin Towers.

Mayor Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said enforcement operations are conducted every two days at the famous tourist landmark in Jalan Ampang to curb the activity.

As of April 14, DBKL has issued 20 compounds and executed 24 seizures against photo touts for flouting the Licensing of Hawkers (WPKL) By-laws 2016. Additionally, two individuals have been served with court orders.

"Announcements are made every 10 minutes in five languages to alert tourists and locals of touts. The photographers pose a safety risk because they often position themselves or tourists in dangerous spots, such as on the road, to capture the perfect angle," he said at an event in Bandar Tun Razak on Thursday (April 16).

Fadlun noted that persistent enforcement has led to a reduction in the number of touts, adding that CCTV footage shows tourists now rarely approach them.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh previously stated that no licences or permits would be issued to photographers operating at the site.
