MAAEDICARE Charitable Foundation has become the first dialysis provider in Malaysia to adopt ultrasound-guided cannulation across all 11 of its charity centres.

Backed by a RM275,000 donation from Thor Specialties Sdn Bhd, the initiative brings advanced vein-imaging technology to centres serving 750 predominantly low-income patients, according to the foundation’s media release.

In ultrasound-guided cannulation, doctors use a real-time ultrasound scan to see exactly where they are placing a needle or tube (cannula) into a vein.

“Enhanced cannulation practices – powered by ultrasound guidance – protect patients’ vital lifelines and preserve dignity in long-term dialysis care.

“Ultrasound guidance optimises this process through precise vessel visualisation, which boosts the clinical teams’ confidence, minimises repeated failed attempts and protects vital vascular access,” said Malaysian Society of Nephrology president Dr Lim Soo Kun.

Foundation chief executive Anne Rajasaikaran said it was proud to be Malaysia’s first nonprofit to bring the technology to its centres nationwide.

Founded in 1994, Maaedicare has emerged as Malaysia’s second-largest non-profit dialysis provider, having cared for more than 32,000 patients to date.

The equipment handover event in Kuala Lumpur also included live demonstrations by Maaedicare nurses, in conjunction with World Kidney Day 2026’s theme of “Kidney Health for All”.

Also present were Maaedicare head of operations Dr Parathy-thasan Rajaandra and Thor Specialties managing director Kiew Chee Heong.
