Ambitious overland journey with much to prove

ENGINES roared, expedition flags were raised and months of preparation finally came to life.

The participants – including chief executive officers and entrepreneurs – were just as excited as the expedition crew.

That was the scene at the official flag-off of the Trans-Siberia 5 Expedition at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur as 52 participants prepared to embark on an epic 69-day overland journey spanning six countries.

Led by veteran expedition leader Thomas Foo, it will see a convoy of 14 vehicles supported by a 12-member crew travel across Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, China, Mongolia and Russia before reaching the legendary Pacific port city of Vladivostok at the edge of the Eurasian continent.

Foo, aka Tango, has led 46 continental expeditions through his outfit, Overland Explorer Centre, yet he described his latest as one of Asia’s most ambitious and challenging modern overland adventures.

Foo: Over the coming weeks we will cross countries, climates and cultures, but more importantly, we will discover the strength within ourselves.

“This is not merely a road trip, it is an expedition driven by endurance, teamwork, resilience and the spirit of exploration,” he said during the flag-off ceremony.

“Over the coming weeks we will cross countries, climates and cultures, but more importantly, we will discover the strength within ourselves.

“There will be challenges, there will be laughter and there will be moments that stay with us long after the journey ends.”

The convoy consists primarily of Toyota Land Cruiser expedition vehicles besides four GWM Tank 500 units which will undergo demanding real-world testing across deserts, mountain passes, remote highways, rugged terrain and extreme climate conditions.

The expedition therefore serves not only as a test of human endurance, but also as a proving ground for the machines themselves.

The GWM Tank 500 has been described as a luxury off-roader equipped with features such as a low-range gearbox, differential locks, multiple terrain modes, an off-road camera system, hill descent control and impressive high water-wading capability.

Foo highlighted how large-scale overland expeditions were increasingly becoming powerful platforms for automotive and adventure brands seeking authentic engagement with audiences.

“In today’s world, consumers want proof, experience and authenticity.

“Real branding is created in real conditions: the freezing cold of Siberia, the dust storms of Mongolia and unforgiving mountain roads.

“If a vehicle can survive a Trans-Siberian expedition, it becomes the ultimate demonstration of toughness, reliability and capability.

“That is why our Asia Offroad Expo and Convention (AOX) 2026 is currently built on three pillars.

“AOX 2026 comprises a physical platform through the expo itself, a virtual platform where products are showcased year-round and the expedition platform where automakers can test their vehicles in real-world conditions while allowing potential buyers to experience them firsthand.

“This has never been done before in Asia’s 4WD sector.”

AOX 2026, scheduled to be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from Oct 23 to 25, aims to showcase how adventure mobility, overlanding culture and experiential tourism are rapidly emerging industries across Asia, particularly with the rise of sport utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks, expedition builds, adventure motorcycles and outdoor lifestyles.

Beyond the automotive dimension, Foo said the expedition also aimed to promote cross-border tourism, cultural understanding and people-to-people connectivity across Asia.

It is also expected to spotlight Asia’s growing role as a global hub for off-road tourism, overlanding and adventure mobility industries.

Foo said his ambitions now extended beyond those of a traditional expedition and expo organiser.

His vision is to build a regional platform connecting tourism, automotive industries, expedition travel, outdoor lifestyle brands, media organisations and adventure communities across Asia and beyond.

His future plans include additional continental expeditions, brand collaborations, tourism initiatives and experiential automotive projects throughout the region.

The Trans-Siberia 5 Expedition is expected to conclude in late July 2026.
