CANCER awareness advocate and endurance runner Lim Shyang Guey, supported by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), continues his remarkable Run for Gold journey – a 2,200km run across peninsular Malaysia to raise awareness and funds for children living with cancer.
Flagging off on March 28 from the NCSM-MPPP Home of Hope at Rose Avenue in Penang, Lim has now reached Alor Setar, Kedah, marking the first official state stop of the campaign.
This milestone signals the start of a series of community engagements planned across all 11 states and federal territories.
In Alor Setar, Lim is being hosted by Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar, where he will meet the public through cancer awareness and educational activities.
The stop provides a vital platform to amplify messages on early detection, timely intervention, and the importance of sustained support for children affected by cancer.
Lim was welcomed by Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar chief executive officer Dr Ahmad Syamir Abdullah and Alor Star mayor Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya.
As a partner of Run for Gold, the hospital has pledged financial support and will accompany Lim at several key stops, including upcoming visits to Aurelius Hospital Nilai in Negri Sembilan and Aurelius Hospital Kuantan in Pahang.
Aurelius has a cancer care centre, offering comprehensive treatment to fight cancer.
Over the course of his journey, the Penang-born Lim aims to run between 25km and 35km daily, with scheduled rest days.
The full route is expected to take around 90 days, culminating in his return in time to celebrate his 67th birthday on June 22, 2026.
More than a physical challenge, the run carries deep personal meaning.
The journey was originally a shared dream between Lim and his late wife Joo Lee, who passed away after battling cancer before they could undertake it together.
Throughout the run, Lim will lodge in homestays, shared accommodation or with local hosts, allowing him to connect closely with communities along the route.
These interactions create opportunities to share key messages about cancer awareness while listening to the experiences of families affected by the disease.
At major stops such as Alor Setar, community engagement events will be organised in collaboration with NCSM, supporters, caregivers, survivors and local partners, strengthening grassroots awareness and outreach efforts.
The Run for Gold initiative draws inspiration from the Gold Ribbon – the universal symbol of childhood cancer awareness, representing the preciousness of children and the resilience of young patients and their families.
