RM5mil lighting upgrade to make Melaka roads safer

Melaka has allocated RM5mil for phased streetlighting upgrades to be carried out this year.

State works, infrastructure, public facilities and transport committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said a total of RM3.5mil would be used to upgrade street lights on Melaka roads, while RM1.5mil was earmarked for those managed by district and land offices.

He said the initiative was aimed at ensuring roads were properly lit, particularly in rural and dark areas, to reduce risk of road accidents and enhance the comfort and safety of road users.

“The upgrades under this special allocation is expected to be carried out within the next two months.

“With this allocation, the state estimates that over 700 new solar-powered lights will be installed on poorly lit rural roads based on requests from local residents,” Hameed said at an event at Poghut Ayer Limau in Kampung Seri Jeram.

Motorists in the Rim, Asahan and Machap areas had long called for improvements, citing dark roads posing safety risks, he said as reported by Bernama.

He added that Melaka also received a RM4mil allocation this year for maintenance and installation of streetlights on federal roads in the state.
