Heavy rainfall in Melaka causes flooding in several areas in the state


MELAKA: Heavy rainfall exceeding the levels recorded during tropical storm Senyar on Nov 28, 2025, has triggered flooding in Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah districts on Saturday (July 11).

The Irrigation and Drainage Department director Mohd Adnan Ahmad Fauzi said that as of 2.30pm, the highest cumulative rainfall, exceeding 100mm, had been recorded in both districts following more than six hours of continuous heavy rain since 6am.

"Rainfall recorded during tropical storm Senyar on Nov 28 last year was 147 mm. However, rainfall recorded today (July 11) at four rain gauge stations in the two districts ranged from 132mm to 158mm," he said in a statement.

The four rainfall stations recorded: Solok Duku in Alor Gajah with 150 mm, Universiti Teknologi Mara Lendu with 141mm, Sungai Udang Agricultural Centre in Melaka Tengah with 158mm and Bertam Hulu Dam with 132mm.

In response to the flooding, three temporary relief centres have been opened to accommodate evacuees from 22 affected areas.

Civil Defence Force director Lt Col (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim said the first relief centre was opened at the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) in Masjid Tanah at 2pm to house evacuees from three areas in Alor Gajah: Taman Masjid Tanah Ria, Jalan Bandar Baru Masjid Tanah and Kampung Pulau Semut.

"So far, 15 people from five families have been placed at the Perkim Masjid Tanah relief centre in Alor Gajah," he said.

"In Melaka Tengah district, two relief centres have also been opened, namely at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Bertambah Ulu at 3.10 pm and Japerun Pantai Kundor at 3.27 pm," he added.

As of 4pm, the evacuation of flood evacuees to both relief centres was still ongoing.

The 19 affected areas in Melaka Tengah include Kampung Bandar Kaba, Taman Wan Show Bukit Cina, Kampung Bukit Beruang, Taman Bukit Beruang Utama, Taman Melawis, Taman Seri Jati, Kampung Kandang, Kampung Balai Panjang, Kampung Batu Berendam, Kampung Padang Pokok Mangga, Kampung Bakar Batu, Kampung Batu Hampar, Kampung Pulau Kelapa, Kampung Musa, Kampung Solok Bukit Palah, Kampung Bachang, Kampung Sarang Helang, Kampung Peringgit and Bertambah Ulu. - Bernama
