SOME would say buka puasa is not complete without the sweet and creamy kuih tepung pelita. And the ones made by Wati Abdul Rahman since 1999 are much sought-after.
To ensure they are available during Ramadan, she had appointed nearly 150 Tepung Pelita Istimewa Paya Jaras sales agents in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
Among them is Nurul Attirah Mohd Radzi, 33, who told Bernama she took on the work to supplement her household income and that she expected to earn RM3,000 this year.
“My usual business is selling bihun sup, kari mee and lontong from a restaurant.
“But during the fasting month, I sell Tepung Pelita Istimewa Paya Jaras instead.
“This is my fourth year selling it,” she said at her temporary stall in Jalan Gombak Batu 5.
She said she would drive about 50km to Wati’s factory in Sungai Buloh every day to get the supplies before opening her stall at 4.30pm.
The mother-of-three said she could sell up to 18 trays (each containing 70 pieces of the kuih) a day.
Another trader, Eira said she has been Wati’s sales agent since 2015.
The 41-year-old homemaker said demand for the kuih at Flora Damansara, where she lives, was strong although there were many other iftar options.
“Even though it costs more now, customers still hunt for it,” she said, adding that she could sell up to 16 trays daily.
