KUCHING: Two mass buka puasa events will be held here and in Asajaya over the next two weekends, reflecting Sarawak's unity in diversity.

State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said the Juh Berambeh Sungkei was returning for its fourth edition at Padang Merdeka here next Saturday (March 14).

Sungkei is the Sarawak Malay word for breaking fast.

"Last year we had more than 5,000 people at the event, including non-Muslims and tourists.

"It's not seen as a religious event but our way of coming together to break the fast with people from different races," he told a press conference here on Thursday.

Karim said participants were encouraged to bring their own food and mats for a communal buka puasa at the event.

He said various activities had been lined up, including busking, a lucky draw and peformance by Malaysian nasyid group Rabbani.

Bubur lambuk and dates will be distributed, along with contributions to asnaf (tithe recipients).

Karim also said the Lan Berambeh Sungkey Belia event will be held at Kompleks Sukan Asajaya on Saturday, following the success of the Kuching event.

"This is the first time we are doing it in Asajaya. We're expecting about 1,700 people to attend.

"Our objective is to foster unity among youths in Asajaya and the surrounding areas," he said.

The Asajaya event will also feature busking, distribution of bubur lambuk and contributions to asnaf.
