Melaka CNY celebration takes on unique spirit with mass buka puasa gathering

MELAKA: The final day of the Lunar New Year will take on a unique spirit of togetherness this year when a mass buka puasa (breaking of fast) gathering is held at Dataran Klebang here, bringing together the festive joy of the celebration and the solemnity of Ramadan.

Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong said the state-level Chinese New Year celebration on Tuesday (March 3) will feature a wide spread of dishes and delicacies for Muslims who wish to break their fast while joining the festivities.

"The celebration coincides with Chap Goh Mei and we invite all locals and tourists to join the event.

"The food serving will begin during buka puasa and continue until 'moreh' (a post-Tarawih meal) during the Ramadan month,” he said in an interview on Tuesday (March 3).

Lim said the programme will also feature lion dance performances as well as traditional music and cultural dances, adding colour to the evening celebration.

He noted that the occasion is particularly meaningful as it is the first time in a while that Chap Goh Mei is being celebrated during the holy month of Ramadan.

“This is a rare moment where two important cultural and religious occasions coincide.

"Let us make this event a platform to strengthen unity and celebrate the harmony that Melaka is known for,” he added.

Lim said the event is expected to be attended by state and community leaders, including Melaka Yang di-Pertua Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

He said preparations had begun earlier to ensure sufficient food is available for those intending to break their fast while attending the celebration.

"There will be also a lucky draw session duirng the event," he said
