ABOUT 225,000 tonnes of carbon emissions were avoided last year through the use of public transport operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.
Prasarana said its network recorded an average of 1.31 million daily passenger journeys, helping remove an estimated 377,000 private vehicles from roads each day.
The figures were highlighted in Prasarana's 2024/2025 Sustainability Report, which outlined the public transport operator's environmental, social and governance efforts.
Prasarana group chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad said sustainable mobility was crucial in addressing climate change, noting that cities account for nearly 70% of global carbon emissions.
"Sustainable mobility is not only part of the solution to climate change, but also an important catalyst in shaping healthier cities, strengthening the economy and improving quality of life," Mohd Nasir said at the report's launch at Prasarana's headquarters in Lembah Subang on Wednesday (July 29).
Prasarana said it will expand sustainability efforts through new rail networks, greater adoption of electric buses and energy efficiency measures.
Rail services form the backbone of the network, carrying more than one million passengers daily as of December last year across 205km of track and 149 stations.
Its bus services recorded about 278,000 weekday passenger journeys across 406 routes, complementing rail, feeder, Bus Rapid Transit and on-demand services in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Kuantan, Pahang.
