More funds needed to maintain KL roads, says Yeoh

KUALA Lumpur needs more funds to maintain its roads which are under increasing pressure from heavy traffic, says Hannah Yeoh.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said a larger allocation was necessary to ensure proper upkeep of the capital’s road network.

She noted that unlike other states, which receive annual allocations through the Malaysia Road Record Information System (Marris), only RM33mil is allocated directly to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) from the Federal Government.

"This is not enough as more than one million vehicles enter the city daily, putting immense stress on its roads," she said on Monday (March 16).

Yeoh added that she had raised the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a National Finance Council meeting.

Earlier, Yeoh visited the Hang Tuah public housing project in Pudu with city mayor Datuk Seri Fadhlun Mak Ujud and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.

The visit was to inspect resurfacing works recently completed by DBKL on roads surrounding the flats.

Meanwhile, Fadhlun said DBKL would carry out maintenance and upgrading works at all 51 public housing (PA) and People’s Housing Project (PPR) schemes under its management this year.

He said the initiative was part of the RM300mil allocation under Budget 2026 to upgrade PPR and PA facilities.

"This reflects DBKL’s commitment to improving the quality of life for urban residents," he said.
