BUBUR lambuk made during a gotong-royong was distributed in front of SK Sentosa in Bukit Assek, Sibu, reflecting the spirit of unity among Sarawak’s diverse communities.

The programme, organised by the Bukit Assek branch of Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas), was led by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

“This is an annual activity by Saberkas Bukit Assek to engage the community and strengthen ties,” said Chieng.

“We may come from different backgrounds, but in Bukit Assek, we live in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

“The programme demonstrates how the community can come together to share joy and lend support to one another,” he told reporters before distributing 200 packets of the traditional rice porridge to residents around Kampung Usaha Jaya Baru.

Chieng, who is also Bukit Assek Saberkas chairman, said although the majority of its members were Chinese, the participation of Malay and Iban members in the Ramadan programme illustrated the harmony found in the state.

Celebrating festivals together is part of the local culture, he said.

“During Chinese New Year, our Malay and Iban friends celebrate with us.

“Likewise, during Ramadan, we as members of the Chinese community also take part in activities like distributing bubur lambuk to the public,” said Chieng.

He said the programme was important to instil unity among the younger generation to continue their appreciation of Sarawak’s multiracial society.
