A PATRIOTIC outreach programme aboard a KTM Komuter train saw participants distributing the Jalur Gemilang to more than 300 passengers travelling between Penang and Kedah.
The programme, which included Minister Steven Sim’s adopted son Lee Teck Qing, was held for passengers travelling from Bukit Mertajam Station to Sungai Petani Station.
It was organised by the Bukit Mertajam Young Women’s Club in collaboration with the Bukit Mertajam Parliamentary Service Centre and the Seberang Perai Tengah Information Office, in conjunction with National Day 2026.
Sim, who is Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP, said the initiative was to foster patriotism among Malaysians of various backgrounds, and strengthen ties between the community and government agencies.
“The programme brought cheer to passengers during their journey and reflected the spirit of togetherness among Malaysians in celebrating the National Month.
“The Jalur Gemilang held by passengers symbolises the unity that continues to thrive among the people,” he said in a statement, Bernama reported.
Bukit Mertajam Young Women’s Club chairman Nasuha Mohd Rodzuan said the initiative was aimed at brightening passengers’ journey while encouraging greater love for the country.
“We hope the distribution of the flags will not only bring joy to passengers but also strengthen their sense of patriotism. May this spirit continue to live in the hearts of all Malaysians,” she said.
Meanwhile, Lee, 22, described the programme as a meaningful experience that carried a message of unity to the community.
“Although we were only distributing flags, it carried the spirit of togetherness,” said the Universiti Sains Malaysia student.
