A fabric of tradition and shared heritage

A MALL group is weaving a tapestry of heritage and modern touches with its “Seindah Corak Aidilfitri” campaign.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Malay textiles, the campaign across Sunway Group’s 11 malls nationwide reinterprets motifs from songket, tenun, batik and tekat into contemporary festive decorations.

Sunway Malls chief executive officer HC Chan said the theme captured the true essence of Aidilfitri.

“It is a time when traditions are honoured, stories are shared and togetherness gives deeper meaning to every celebration.

“Through this campaign, Sunway Malls translate cultural heritage into a contemporary festive experience,” he said during the launch at Sunway Putra Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

At Sunway Putra Mall, the main concourse is decorated with a striking ketupat-inspired backdrop.

The installation is complemented by flowing textile ribbons, suspended geometric motifs and bazaar-style structures reminiscent of kampung festivities in a palette of rich greens, warm golds, and jewel tones.

Chan said malls served as public spaces where people of all walks of life and ages congregated, making the mall a true microcosm of Malaysia.

“The measure of societal progress is how we go beyond merely accepting to truly embracing one another.

“Festivity in malls is not just a showcase of culture but a platform of inclusion to know another’s culture better.

“If we examine these closely, we see these intricate patterns are more than just fabric; they are a visual language of our heritage,” he noted.

The launch by Chan alongside Sunway Malls senior general managers Dr KS Wong (southern region), Jason Chin (Selangor), Phang Sau Lian (Kuala Lumpur) and Chai Wen Yew (northern region) featured a symbolic batik-stamping activation.

Imprinting five traditional motifs onto a lightbox display, the group set off illumination of a giant ketupat installation at the main atrium.

Chan said this year’s celebration reflected the group’s vision of bridging the connection between the past and present.

He said collaborations were being forged to promote culture and tourism in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.

“The closer we work together – whether with government bodies, tourism associations, industry players, artists or academic institutions – the more synchronised we become to welcome guests from all over the world,” he added.

The mall group’s “Seindah Corak Aidilfitri” features efforts with various partners and support from local authorities, including Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

A highlight is “A Story in Every Motif” with Sunway University integrating augmented reality, where visitors can scan motifs to explore the history and symbolism behind each design in an interactive cultural journey.

Across the group’s 11 malls, families can enjoy festive performances, workshops and promotions rooted in culture and creativity.
