Fresh off a historic achievement on the global stage, Malaysian pianist Vincent Ong is returning to his roots to inspire the next generation of local musicians.
The 25-year-old made history last year as the first Malaysian prize winner at the prestigious International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland.
He secured joint fifth place with Polish pianist Piotr Alexewicz at the 19th edition of the competition, regarded as the pinnacle of the piano world, in October.
Ong will be returning to our shores for a series of events next month.
Titled “Vincent Ong: A Homecoming”, the programme kicks off in Kuala Lumpur with a piano masterclass and dialogue at 10am on March 20, followed by a recital at 8pm on March 24.
Both events will be held at the UCSI University Recital Hall.

Ong will then travel to his native Penang for a masterclass and dialogue at the Steinway Gallery in Gurney Paragon Mall at 11am on March 27, before performing at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre at 7.30pm on March 28.
Currently based in Berlin, Germany, Ong said he was both excited and grateful for the opportunity.
“Coming home through music is deeply meaningful to me, as Penang and Malaysia shaped my earliest musical experiences.
“It is my way of giving back – by sharing what I have learned, connecting with audiences and inspiring the next generation,” he added.
Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said achievements like Ong’s deserve to be celebrated by the community that nurtured him.
“His success did not happen overnight. It was the result of countless hours of practice, discipline and the courage to perform on one of the world’s most demanding stages.
“With every impressive performance, Ong enhances the presence of Penang and Malaysia on the global cultural map.
“When our talents succeed internationally, they do more than win prizes – they become cultural ambassadors,” Wong said at a press conference in Komtar.
The tour is presented by Rondo Production, a Penang-based social enterprise advocating for accessible high-quality music education.
Founder and chief executive officer Kenny Ooi said Ong’s success showed just how far Malaysian musicians could go when they have the right environment and support systems around them.
“It sends a powerful message that global excellence is possible when young talents are nurtured, supported and believed in,” he added.
Due to overwhelming response and tickets selling out fast, Ooi said the organisers added another recital in Kuala Lumpur on March 23 at 8pm.
The event is supported by TalentCorp Malaysia and the Penang government.
Also present at the press conference were Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, KinMalaysia Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer and managing director Dominic Oh, Penang Marriott Complex acting general manager Michael Farag and TalentCorp Malaysia board director Heng Charng Yee.
Tickets are priced from RM100 onwards. For details, visit www.rondoproduction.my
