At 69, Lim Kee Yong shows that age is no barrier to spreading Chinese New Year cheer.

The long-time Pengkalan Kempas resident is known for his passion for painting murals.

He had spent the past four years painting and decorating walls of his eatery in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

Lim said his excitement for decorating his home, restaurant and neighbourhood for the Lunar New Year has not faded.

He was seen busy beautifying his shop, stringing up lanterns and painting a zodiac-themed mural.

“Last year I painted a snake; this year, I repainted the wall white and drew a horse for the Year of the Horse.

“I will keep doing the same for the years ahead,” he told Bernama.

“This is my fourth year painting murals and putting up festive decorations,” he said, adding that the decorative items and painting supplies were sourced from the village’s association.

Lim, who has lived in the village for over 40 years, said the old town was also decorated with lanterns and ornamental flowering plants.

Meanwhile, Pengkalan Kempas Culture and Tourism Association chairman David Ng said about RM10,000 was spent each year decorating the area for Chinese New Year celebrations.

He said public donations were used to organise various activities, including decorating the village which has about 130 residents.

Ng said Pengkalan Kempas was also a popular spot among anglers, especially those targeting giant freshwater prawns.

“I hope this initiative will foster unity and responsibility among villagers to keep the village beautiful, comfortable and harmonious,” he added.
