MORE than 1,500 smart closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras are operating across four local councils in Greater Johor Baru to strengthen safety, surveillance and real-time city management.

State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the rollout involved Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) and Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu).

“A total of 1,542 smart CCTV cameras have been installed to date, forming the foundation of the region’s expanding surveillance network,” he said.

“There are 500 smart CCTV units each in operation under MBIP and MBJB, followed by 340 units under MBPG and 202 units under MPKu.

“Within areas under MBJB, the number of cameras will eventually be increased to 2,000 units.”

Mohd Jafni said the cameras were placed in key public locations such as main roads, business districts, residential areas and accident-prone spots.

“The system includes vehicle recognition, behavioural detection and remote-controlled viewing, allowing faster response to emergencies, improved traffic management and enhanced crime prevention,” he said.

“The technology supports real-time decision-making and quicker mobilisation of relevant agencies during incidents involving accidents, fires, flash floods and public disturbances.”

Speaking during his visit to the Iskandar Puteri Command Centre, Mohd Jafni pointed out that the facility integrated multiple data streams into a single operations centre.

“It enables officers to monitor incidents in real-time and coordinate immediate action with on-ground teams.

“The centre is also linked to smart traffic lights, environmental sensors and enforcement databases as part of the broader city digitalisation agenda.”

Mohd Jafni said Johor government would continue to strengthen technological infrastructure in the state, adding that smart monitoring played a crucial role in protecting residents and keeping pace with rapid urban development.

“Our priority is public safety. These systems allow us to detect risks earlier, respond faster and safeguard the welfare of Johor citizens more effectively.

“This initiative forms part of the Johor Selamat and Johor Smart City agenda, which is aimed at aligning local councils with modern urban management standards while maintaining a people-centred public service approach.”
