Fireworks of flavours when mooncakes meet brandy

THIS Mid-Autumn Festival, France’s oldest independent, family-owned cognac house Camus is introducing an unexpected pairing with mooncakes.

The union between Camus and Singapore’s 92-year-old heritage brand Bee Cheng Hiang is redefining the festive table.

This “East meets West” partnership is founded on a shared deep commitment to craftsmanship, tradition and continuous innovation, seeking to elevate cognac from an after-dinner digestif to a versatile, celebratory gastronomic experience.

For the White Lotus with Bakkwa Mooncake, featuring a savoury-sweet burst of gourmet bakkwa, the selected partner is the Camus VSOP Intense Classic.

The cognac’s profile, with its bright notes of pear, pineapple and citrus peel, provides a vibrant and zesty freshness that cuts through the richness of the lotus paste and the savoury bakkwa.

Furthermore, its gentle oak and vanilla undertones echo the caramelised and barbecue flavour of the meat, creating a harmonious sweet-and-savoury balance.

Another pairing, the Signature Bakkwa Mooncake with Camus XO Borderies Single Estate, marries the pork belly bakkwa and a lavish blend of walnuts, cashews and two types of seeds – melon and sesame – with the cognac’s pleasant aromas of violet, orange blossom, honeysuckle and sweet nuttiness.

Camus Borderies VSOP is a Single-Estate Cognac produced exclusively from Camus’ own vineyards in the very heart of the prestigious Borderies Appellation.

Borderies is the oldest and smallest cru in the appellation, representing less than 5% of the cognac Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), a strict French regulation that guarantees a spirit’s authenticity and quality by mandating specific production rules within a designated region.

With its 188ha, Camus owns the largest expanse of vineyards belonging to one single producer within the Cru.

Camus VSOP Borderies can also pair with traditional mooncakes like the white lotus double yolk moocake, which contains premium quality lotus seeds, giving the mooncake a smooth and creamy mouthfeel without being cloyingly rich.

Meanwhile, the Black Sesame White Lotus mooncake is paired with Camus XO Intensely Aromatic.

The richness from the black sesame seeds and the subtle aroma from the pure lotus paste blend well with the cognac’s intense floral aromas, along with flavours of dried and candied fruit.

Camus cognac is available in various online stores in Malaysia.
