Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bukit Merah Laketown Resort and Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation to strengthen the tourism, conservation and education ecosystem in Perak.

The agreement was signed by MPT president Mohamed Akmal Dahalan, Bukit Merah Sdn Bhd director Md Nazri Tumin and foundation chairman Prof Emeritus Datuk Abdul Latiff Mohamad at a ceremony held at the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari.

Bernama reported that the strategic collaboration aimed to develop a more integrated tourism, education, conservation and community development ecosystem, while strengthening ties between two of Perak’s main tourism destinations, namely Taiping and Bukit Merah.

Mohamed Akmal said various initiatives would be implemented, including the development of integrated tourism packages, cross-promotion between destinations, education and conservation awareness programmes, development of new tourism products, as well as community and sustainability programmes that could benefit the public.

“What was signed today is not just an MOU, but the beginning of efforts to establish a more integrated tourism ecosystem in Perak,” he said.

“When tourism attractions, conservation institutions and industry players work together, it will benefit the organisations involved and also be enjoyed by the local community through economic opportunities, education and more sustainable community development,” he added.

In addition to increasing visitor numbers to both destinations, Md Nazri said the collaboration would also create economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs while encouraging tourists to stay longer and spend more in the state.

“We also view this collaboration as an important platform to strengthen awareness of the importance of environmental and biodiversity conservation.

“We hope that more people, especially the younger generation, will be exposed to conservation efforts and the importance of protecting natural heritage,” he said.

Mohamed Akmal and Md Nazri were speaking at a press conference after the MOU signing ceremony.
