SUBANG Jaya City Council (MBSJ) will update its Disaster Relief Operations Strategic Plan to include emergency response measures for gas pipeline explosions.

Mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said this was needed following the Putra Heights incident in April this year, which destroyed homes and displaced hundreds of residents.

“We never expected such a disaster.

“But the lesson is clear; we must be prepared for scenarios beyond floods and landslides, the two main risks already covered,” he told a press conference after chairing MBSJ’s full board meeting at its headquarters in USJ5.

He was asked about MBSJ’s move to further strengthen mitigation plans after Subang Jaya’s first gas explosion emergency and evacuation drill in SS19.

The exercise was organised with PETRONAS Gas and supported by the police, fire and rescue services, district officials, and community groups.

The existing MBSJ disaster relief guide, published after the December 2021 floods, currently outlines flood and landslide- prone areas, evacuation centres, routes and control posts.

“With gas explosions now identified as a new risk, we will make improvements and amendments,” said Amirul Azizan.

He noted that the drill underscored challenges faced by SS19, which is a dense residential area with only two main entry and exit points.

MBSJ will also continue to raise awareness among residents so that they know what to do in the event of a disaster, he said.

About 50 community leaders and neighbourhood representatives from SS19 were involved in the drill.

Separately, Amirul Azizan revealed the calendar of events to celebrate MBSJ’s fifth anniversary this month.
