Big harvest from small garden

THE vegetables and chickens tended by Mohd Khaironnie Ng Mohd Raisman Ng, 41, in his 30sq m garden in Ayer Molek, Melaka not only benefit his family but also the local community.

The Kampung Bukit Durian resident, who started gardening a decade ago, said it began as something to do in his free time and to allow his four children, aged seven to 15, to learn about plants and insects.

“However, it has grown and now I have 1,200 hydroponic net pots yielding 100kg to 300kg of vegetables per month,” the private sector employee told Bernama.

Besides hydroponic farming, he has also repurposed 150 old tyres into planters growing brinjal, lady’s fingers and corn.

“I try to practise organic farming as much as possible, using cuka kayu (pyroligneous acid) and planting flowers to attract predatory insects for natural pest control.”

He also rears 50 free-range chickens for meat and around 50 Lohmann Brown hens that lay 40 to 50 eggs daily.

“To control the chicken coop smell, I use rice husk as bedding and replace it every two months.

“The old bedding is composted and reused as fertiliser.

“The vegetables can be harvested within a month and the surplus is sold to villagers for RM3 to RM5 per pack or in a combo of four for RM10.

“Proceeds from the egg sales are reinvested in the garden and to buy chicken feed.

“My social media posts have attracted many to my garden while I also hold small-scale farming classes for those who are interested,” he said, adding that many now see it as a simple but effective way to obtain fresh food and reduce living costs.
