Historical, cultural display for Malaysia Day celebration draws 10,000 to Butterworth

THE national-level Malaysia Day celebration at Penang International Convention Cultural and Arts Centre (Picca) in Butterworth Arena was a vibrant display of culture, unity and patriotism.

Themed “Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni”, the event drew some 10,000 people.

It featured an exhibition titled “Menelusuri Zaman” (Journeying Through the Eras), which saw booths taken up by several government bodies such as Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Penang Public Library Corporation (PPAPP).

At PPAPP’s booth, visitors perused bound copies of old newspapers and vintage souvenir programme books.

The exhibition also showcased traditional attire, antique radios and television, vintage bicycles as well as brassware.

Mutiara FM, a radio station managed by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), displayed its vintage broadcast equipment such as gramophones and radios, attracting both young and old visitors.

Another crowd-puller was an exhibition by the Information Department, which featured photos of previous Malaysia Day celebrations.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the main celebration at night.

A highlight was the “Rentak Tradisi Pulau Mutiara” cultural extravaganza, where more than 200 dancers performed Joget Joghee, Chinese opera, and Boria.

At the close of the celebration, visitors waved mini Jalur Gemilang and sang patriotic songs.
