Malaysia Day blood drive highlights solidarity, hope

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Teo Chew Association marked Malaysia Day by holding a blood donation drive.

The annual event, now in its 35th year, was held at the Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, with the target of collecting 600 bags of blood.

The drive was organised in collaboration with the National Blood Centre, supported by 28 non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

In his speech, association president Tan Kim Teck said the blood donation drive aimed to alleviate constraints faced by the country’s healthcare system.

“Our system faces immense challenges as blood banks often run low on supply, with many patients in need of help.

“Blood donation is the best example of Malaysia’s diversity and unity, with each drop representing solidarity and hope as people from all ethnic and religious backgrounds come together to donate blood,” he said.

Kim Teck said the event symbolised the spirit of unity and harmony the country was known for.

“We are gathered here, regardless of race or religion, united in our desire to help others by donating blood.

“I also call upon more Malaysians, especially the younger generation, to actively participate in blood donations,” he said.

Organising committee chairman Elena Tan Pue Khuan expressed thanks to the 28 NGOs and sponsors for supporting the event.

“Your support has enabled us to continue carrying out this community initiative that has lasted more than three decades,” she said.

“The blood donation drive aims to highlight the importance of humanitarian care and social responsibility,” said Pue Khuan.

“It also reflects the spirit of unity and collaboration among community organisations.”

The programme included a competition for participants with the highest record of blood donated over the years, with cash prizes of RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM500 for first, second and third places respectively.

Guest-of-honour Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai sponsored the prizes.

Also present was the association’s advisor Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai.
