Sarawak river race awaits thrill-seekers

YOU’LL want to be in Selangau, Sarawak, next month if you love the thrill of extreme sports and want an unforgettable river experience.

The 21km Selangau Raft Challenge 2025 on Oct 26 is expected to put Sibu district on the map of top destinations for adventure tourism.

Targeting the participation of 50 teams, the course takes on Batang Mukah from Rumah Empera in Sungai Wong Atas to Selangau Waterfront.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong said the race would be the main attraction for Selangau Carnival 2025 which will be held from Oct 24 to 26.

He hopes the rafting challenge will open up new avenues for the growth of regional tourism and establish Selangau as a host for world-class adventure events.

“We are confident that this event will open many eyes to the uniqueness of our river and the rich cultural heritage of our community,” Wong said at a press conference announcing the challenge and its inclusion in the Borneo Raft Safari series.

The Selangau Carnival, meanwhile, will feature local vendors, the “Main Adat Asal Iban” cultural performance showcase, karaoke, Zumba and a digital marketing workshop.

“This is not only a platform to promote Selangau’s natural beauty, but also an economic opportunity for small traders, local business owners and the surrounding communities,” said Wong.
