Traffic congestion at Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai in Sibu, Sarawak, may be a thing of the past once work on a 400m lane is completed in four months’ time.

“This is the latest road improvement project undertaken by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) along Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai.

“It is a very busy road and we have observed frequent long queues at the traffic light junction that connects Jalan Deshon and Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, causing significant congestion,” said Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang.

Speaking to reporters during a site visit, he said the project involved constructing an additional 400m right-turn lane at a cost of RM900,000 to ease traffic flow at the intersection of Jalan Ling Kai Cheng and Jalan Deshon.

“I believe this will be an effective way to reduce bottleneck in the area.

“Based on the current pace of work, it is expected to be completed within four months.

“The construction so far includes raising the road and building a new divider,” said Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the project was aimed at reducing waiting time at the traffic light junction.

“By extending the right-turn lane, we hope to shorten the queue.

“This junction is particularly busy because it serves as a route to Jalan Ling Kai Cheng and Jalan Ulu Lanang,” he said. – By ANDY CHUA
