A NEW centre aimed at equipping individuals with sewing skills has been launched by Pure Life Society (PLS) Women’s Wing in partnership with Dinas Tailoring and Crafting Academy.
Previously, PLS Sewing Centre offered training only to residents of the society’s welfare home.
It has now been renamed PLS Designing and Tailoring Centre and will support individuals within and beyond the home.
Puvasathevy Muthuthamby, a teacher who has been with PLS for 41 years, said the centre had the potential to be transformative for participants.
“It will definitely change their lives,” Puvasathevy said, adding that even with three diplomas in sewing, handicraft and embroidery, she still wanted to learn and would be joining the course.
The centre in Jalan Puchong, Kuala Lumpur, was launched by PLS vice-president Datuk VL Kandan and Dinas Tailoring and Crafting Academy chief executive officer and founder Selvamalar Batumalai.
PLS Women’s Wing, established in 2015, promotes women’s empowerment through education, healthcare, employment and community-based initiatives, recognising their vital role in national development.
The new centre aims to uplift the underprivileged through entrepreneurial opportunities, said PLS Women’s Wing chairman Premalatha Shanmugam.
The goal, she said, was to equip individuals with tailoring skills that could be a source of income for both women and men.
“This reflects the vision of our late president, Mother Mangalam, who emphasised the value of skills training not just for children, but also adults.
“The duration of the course is three months and participants will learn practical skills like basic tailoring and alterations, which are increasingly in demand.
“Even small jobs can generate income. For instance, RM10 per alteration could help cover daily expenses or provide an allowance for children,” she added.
The centre plans to accept two batches of students annually, with the first intake beginning this month.
Eligible individuals from underprivileged backgrounds will be provided scholarships, while others can also take the course for a fee.
Applications are open until July 10. For details, contact 017-379 3003.
