SUBANG JAYA: Residents of Jalan SS14/1 in Subang Jaya have expressed concerns over multiple mounds of sand and gravel left unattended on a 250m stretch of grass verge along the terrace houses.
The presence of these materials has resulted in dust being blown into their homes, posing potential health risks to locals.
Senior residents are particularly worried about the airborne dust, which could exacerbate health problems for some community members with respiratory issues.
SL Lim, a local resident, voiced his concerns to StarMetro, highlighting that workers unloaded the materials weeks ago but failed to cover them with canvas sheets.
"During windy conditions, the fine sand particles become airborne," he explained. "We understand the need for these materials for the upgrading works, but in a residential area, safety measures like canvas covers and flashing beacon lamps are essential."
KY Sam, another resident, urged the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) to ensure that the authorities involved in the upgrading works restore the grass verge to its original condition, ensuring an unobstructed pathway for pedestrians.
"Most residents recognise that temporarily storing sand on the grass verge is common practice. However, we expect contractors to properly manage the area,” he stated.
In response to residents’ concerns, Air Selangor’s corporate communications head, Elina Baseri, confirmed that instructions have been issued to the contractor to enhance safety measures by installing flashing beacon lights.
"Regarding the dust pollution, contractors have been told to cover the sand piles with plastic canvas," she added.
Residents remain hopeful that these steps will mitigate the dust issue and improve safety in their neighbourhood.
