SUBANG Jaya is set to get its first public library, to be built and managed by the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) along Jalan Subang 3.

The proposed site in the USJ1 neighbourhood is presently undergoing a land gazettement process by the state authorities, with construction targeted to begin later this year.

Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng (pic) said the project would be run by PPAS, with the official gazette expected to be signed by the Selangor Mentri Besar soon.

“The Subang Jaya public library will be located on a piece of 0.29ha institutional land at Jalan Subang 3,” Ng told StarMetro.

“It was formerly gazetted for a Klinik Kesihatan (Health Clinic) but the Health Ministry felt that it was unsuitable as the plot was too small.

“While Klinik Kesihatan USJ1 has since been relocated to a bigger space nearby, this land was left vacant until the suggestion to build a public library was brought up.”

Ng said the location would ensure the facility was highly accessible to the local community.

“This site is within walking distance of two schools – SJK (C) Chee Wen and Oakbridge International School,” she said.

“Its strategic location will also make the library widely accessible to residents of low-cost flats situated within the USJ1 area, such as Pangsapuri Meranti, Pangsapuri Angsana and Pangsapuri Permai.

“It will benefit the city’s folk, especially children and those who need a quiet, conducive space to study.”

During the Selangor State Assembly sitting in July last year, Ng had requested updates on the library plan and was informed that PPAS had applied for RM700,000 to construct the facility.

“For now, the budget approved is for a community library, which is smaller than the ones run by PPAS in Petaling Jaya and Klang.

“However, given the rather large land size, there is always room for expansion in the future,” the assemblyman added.

StarMetro contacted PPAS for comment but had yet to receive a reply at press time.
