PETALING Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung will coordinate a briefing with Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) within two weeks to address drainage issues following a weekend flash flood in several parts of the city.
The incident caused nearly RM2mil in damage at a commercial warehouse and affected residential and business areas.
Lee announced the briefing for affected residents and stakeholders after visiting a warehouse on Jalan 223 that was flooded.
He said at least eight business operators had contacted him regarding the floods.
Resolving the problem was critical to maintaining investor confidence in the area, he added.
Recurring inundations have drawn criticism from Muda treasurer-general VKK Rajasekaran, who said floods at Section 51A, Jalan Damansara and Section 12 demonstrated a lack of long-term planning.
“The absence of a complete fix is a governance failure, not a natural disaster,” he said.
The flash flood also impacted homes along Jalan 12/12 and Jalan 12/14 in Section 12.
Resident Shankari Sundrasekaran said the monsoon drain next to the houses was upgraded five years ago, yet ankle-level floodwaters entered their homes.
“The retaining wall in the drain also collapsed,” she said.
Kuldeep Singh Jaswant Singh said the neighbourhood had not seen flooding like this since 2001.
“Despite extensive work carried out on the monsoon drain, the area still flooded,” he said.
MBPJ did not respond to requests for comment at press time.
