E-waste recycling programme to create sustainable livelihoods for women

Nuraizah Shamsul: We’re not just empowering women financially, but also nurturing a generation of eco-conscious business leaders.

IN celebration of Earth Day 2025, e-waste collection hubs operated by 10 women entrepreneurs will be established across the Klang Valley and in Johor Baru under a newly launched MADCash x ERTH Mini Hub programme.

The initiative aims to collect at least 5,000kg of electronic waste in the next 12 months, while providing sustainable income opportunities for women.

The project is the result of a partnership between MADCash Sdn Bhd, a Kuala Lumpur-based financial technology firm empowering women through micro-financing, and Electronic Recycling Through Heroes (ERTH), a Cyberjaya-based e-waste recycling entity.

ERTH has allocated RM5,000 in funds for each participant as a loan.

They will receive a RM500 microloan as startup capital to pay for the collection of e-waste.

MADCash founder Nuraizah Shamsul Baharin said, “This collaboration aligns with our mission to create sustainable livelihoods for women.

“By integrating green entrepreneurship in our model, we’re not just empowering women financially, but also nurturing a generation of eco-conscious business leaders,” she said.

ERTH founder Mohamed Tarek El-Fatatry added, “Tackling e-waste requires community-driven solutions.

“And through this partnership, we’re turning women into environmental heroes, proving that small actions can drive big change.”

The programme was designed to promote green entrepreneurship, encourage women to run eco-friendly micro-businesses from their communities and foster environmental awareness.

MADCash and ERTH will evaluate the pilot project periodically to assess its scalability for expansion.

In a statement, MADCash said electronic waste was a growing environmental concern, with improper disposal leading to pollution and health hazards.

By engaging women entrepreneurs as collection agents, it said that the project was addressing two critical challenges – e-waste management and women’s economic empowerment.

MADCash is in the process of selecting 10 participants and aims to get them on board by May 5.

The participants will receive training and resources to operate their mini hubs effectively.

The programme’s success will be measured by the e-waste collected and women’s income growth.

If proven effective, the model could expand nationwide.

The public is encouraged to support the initiative by donating e-waste such as old phones, laptops and cables at designated hubs.
