STADIUM Hoki MBPJ has received Category 1 certification from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) following upgrading works costing almost RM8mil.
Spanning about 10,000sq m, it is located along Jalan Selangor, PJS3 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The stadium is now among facilities approved to host international-level hockey tournaments and televised matches, following a certification that is valid for three years from May 19.
It will also serve as a venue for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, which will take place from Aug 15 to 24, with the women’s hockey competition to be held there.
Then Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the upgrading project involved six main components namely the stadium building, hockey pitch, floodlights, parking area, audio system and an interactive mural.
“The biggest expenditure was for the turf, about RM4.4mil.
“The overall upgrading works involving all six components cost nearly RM8mil,” he said after launching the upgraded stadium.
The stadium now features an Xtreme Turf H13 synthetic pitch that meets international hockey competition specifications, as well as an LED floodlighting system that complies with the FIH TV3 Sports Lighting standard.
Other improvements include an electronic scoreboard, changing rooms, toilets, surau, grandstand and upgraded parking facilities.
The stadium can accommodate up to 500 spectators and has 69 bays for cars and 24 motorcycle bays.
Mohamad Zahri said Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) was informed that it was the first local authority in the country to have a hockey stadium awarded FIH Category 1 certification.
“This is a source of pride for MBPJ.
“It proves the city council’s continued commitment to providing modern and quality sporting facilities capable of meeting the requirements of high-level competitions.”
He added that quality sporting facilities would provide greater comfort for athletes and users, while supporting talent development and strengthening PJ’s standing as a city with international-standard sports infrastructure.
The stadium will be available for public bookings after Sukma.
It is expected to host the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) hockey championship and the women’s competition of the national-level Tun Abdul Razak Cup.
The women’s matches will be played at the MBPJ stadium and the men’s competition in Klang.
On maintenance, Mohamad Zahri said the upgraded facilities remained under warranty, while maintenance costs had been included in MBPJ’s annual budget.
“This is to ensure the stadium and its facilities remain in good condition,” he said.
