SEASONED veteran shuttlers Chan Wan Seong and Bruni Garip emerged champions in the Men’s Doubles Combined Age 140 category at an international badminton tournament held in Selangor.
The duo defeated Pahat@Supangat Chalan and Thorairaju Munian 31-28 in the gruelling final of the inaugural Summer Cup International Badminton Championship 2026.
Held at the GoTeam Sports Complex in Klang, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, the championship was organised by Four Seasons Badminton Club.
It attracted more than 350 participants from Malaysia, China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei and Australia across 51 age-group and team events.
Chan, a multiple medallist in several major international senior tournaments, said he and Bruni decided to compete in the Men’s Doubles Combined Age 140 category because it was more challenging.
“Our combined age is 146 years.
“Normally, we compete in the Men’s Doubles 70-74 age category in Badminton World Federation (BWF)-sanctioned events, which use the 21-point, best-of-three-sets format.

“We felt that this format was a fairer reflection of the competitive standards among peer pairs in the same age group,” he said.
Chan said they wanted to test their partnership in the more challenging and competitive 140 category at the Summer Cup, which featured eight pairs.
“We treated this as a tune-up for two upcoming global senior tournaments, namely the World Chinese Individual Badminton Championships on Hainan Island, played under the 31-point scoring format, followed by the Asian Senior Badminton Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, played under the 21-point, best-of-three-sets format.
“We are pleased to have won the Summer Cup despite facing strong competition,” Chan said.
At the tournament, Bruni also won the gold medal in the Men’s Singles 70-74 category.
Bruni is the reigning 2025 BWF Men’s Singles 70-74 champion, while he and Chan are the reigning BWF Men’s Doubles 70-74 bronze medallists.
Meanwhile, KT Jestin KT Mendis Appu won three gold medals across three categories.
The titles came in the Men’s Singles 55-59 category, the Men’s Doubles 45-59 category with Lim San Sui of Helsinki, Finland, and the Men’s Doubles Combined Age 120 category with Malaysian, Shahrin Mohd Nor.
“It was truly a happy and unforgettable day for me,” said Jestin.
“I am very grateful to my family, especially my wife, for supporting me throughout this journey.
“Travelling for badminton takes time and commitment, and their understanding means a lot to me,” he said.
Jestin’s upcoming tournaments include Pattaya, Thailand, in November and Bangalore, India, in December.
In the Team Event Challenge, Puchong United Badminton Team A emerged champions after defeating Lucky Star Badminton Club in the final.
