MEASURES are being taken to address recurring floods affecting Taman Sri Muda, Meru and Taman Seri Alam in Selangor.

State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim, in a statement, said during a meeting with relevant departments and agencies, Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) had presented long-term, medium-term and immediate plans for the three areas.

“The federal and state governments are implementing various long-term flood mitigation measures to resolve the recurring flood problems in these areas.

“Immediate actions that can be completed within the next few days must also be carried out.”

Immediate flood mitigation measures implemented in Meru include installation of a flap gate and booster pump activation at Sungai Binjai as well as the maintenance of ditches and drains.

At Taman Sri Muda, works include upgrading of the ageing drainage system, said Izham.

“We will also replace damaged flap gates at the outlet to Sungai Klang, expand the Taman Sri Muda Retention Pond, strengthen and upgrade the earth bund along the banks of Sungai Klang as well as build an earth bund along the bank of Sungai Rasau.

“The state will also act against any encroachment on river reserve land,” he said.

Also present at the meeting were state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, Meru assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid, Kota Kemuning assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan, Shah Alam City Council and Klang Royal City Council engineering department directors and Selangor Public Works Department representatives.

Meanwhile, Izham said the Hillpark Flood Retention Pond in Puncak Alam, which had ruptured for the second time in six months, had caused floods in Taman Seri Alam, Sungai Buloh.

“DID presented a report on the status of its repair work.

“Developer Hillpark Resources, through discussions with DID and the residents association, has proposed several immediate measures to resolve the issue of the ruptured retention pond.

“These urgent measures will be implemented within this week,” he said, adding that he would monitor the progress of the measures being taken.
